Description of the workshop

 

Alte Goldschmiede In 1953, in this building in Vallendar, near Koblenz – nowadays known as the “former workshop” (Alte Goldschmiede) – the history of the workshop began under the management of Paul M. Rothgerber. This was the start of a symbiosis of a deeply religious understanding and art that has been lasting for decades.
Paul Rothgerber In 1971, Paul Rothgerber received the certificate of appointment as head of the Masters’ committee of the Craft of Goldsmithing and later on got elected grandmaster of the guild. Knowing of the importance of the youth when building the future, he supported them politically as well as in his own workshop.
Werkstatt More than 70 young people finished their education as a Goldsmith or Silversmith here. Today, an extensive education is still an essential cornerstone.
Michael_van_Ooyen Michael van Ooyen, the current manager of the workshop, teaches at the Chamber of Crafts Koblenz and is an active member of the committee of examiners of further education as a Restorer. Additionally, he contributes to quality assurance by his help in the central association in the department for training and continuing education.
Bronzerelief-Modell Over the years, the workshop has turned into a worldwide center for liturgical art. Sacral devices can be found on all continents and entire churches, i.g. in Luxembourg, Germany and Sweden, have been equipped with tabernacles, altars, paschal candlesticks and baptisteries.
Florian Friedrich When restoring sacral art which is, in some cases, several centuries old, extensive knowledge and mastery of old techniques is a must, starting with the ability to evaluate and repair any damage caused over time.
Karl-Heinz_Overfeld The size and equipment of our workshop and our qualified personnel enable us to apply almost any of the old techniques. It is equally important to get used to new technology and ways of working in order to keep the workpieces as authentic as possible. We have access to a variety of equipment for galvanic gilding / silver plating as well as mercury gilding /silver plating.
Goldschmelzen Preserving and saving of the original materials has got top priority. Therefore collaboration with the conservators of the respective offices of restoration of historical and religious monuments is important, especially when dealing with historically significant pieces of art.
Gravieren In order to preserve the liturgical devices such as chalice, monstrance or ciborium we are offering seminars on a regular basis. There, Michael van Ooyen, Master of Gold- and Silversmithing, teaches the participants how to treat and care for the objects. This concerns mostly sacristans and custodians since they are usually the ones responsible for preserving and dealing with the devices.
Bundespreis-Logo In 2010, the goldsmiths and art workshop of the Schoenstatt Brothers of Mary awarded the Federal Award for Craft in the field of conservation of historic monuments handed over by the former Prime Minister Mr. Kurt Beck in Mainz.
