On the following pages we would like to describe our activities concerning quality insurance and quality improvements. Not only are the mastery of the necessary old and new techniques, such as mercury gilding, a part of it, it is equally important to check and improve efficiency and economical thinking. This concerns production and repairing of jewelry and especially restoration of old and historical works.
For a Restorer, knowing the traditional techniques is required to evaluate historical works and it is a basis for the decision which way of restoration should or must be chosen. It is part of our work to further deepen that knowledge in order to improve the results of our work.
The profession of the Gold- and Silversmith in its original sense is dying out bit by bit – and along with it we are losing the knowledge of the old craft, its techniques and possibilities for design. Therefore it is going to get more and more important to retain interdisciplinary collaboration with conservators, technicians, teachers and historians of Art in order to keep the craft alive. It is for this reason we initiated a project with the Chamber of Crafts in Koblenz (which is the center of Restoration and care of historical monuments in Herrstein) that is encouraged by the “Leonardo da Vinci” program and involves three more partners.
The project is called, “Development of international training contents for gold forging handicraft in the field of restoration” and coordinated and managed by the Chamber of Crafts. There are two main parts of the project: improving and refreshing the knowledge at hand to make it reliable and available in different fields of work and education. It is also supposed to lead on to further sources of information.
Additionally, it is one of the project’s main goals to describe the existing and the traditional techniques as well as to re-check and refresh them to make them usable for education in schools and workshops alike.
On the next pages, you will get to know the current results of the project as well as several techniques we use. Furthermore, we will provide you with documentations describing entire restoration processes.
